Now for all the gorgeous textiles, needlecrafts, and more.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
At Greenfield Village there are two working farms and the majority of other homes portray home-life for the people who would have lived there. There are quilts, embroidery, knitting, knitting, knitting... I swear there was knitting in over half the homes, and other needle crafts in the other half.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There are a few shops in the Village that show the kinds of things that were available for purchase at the store. There are bolts of fabric, skeins of embroidery silk, skeins of wool, needles. You can watch people spinning wool, see nitty noddys on display, spinning wheels galore. Later in the summer you can see dying of wool taking place.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Additionally there are a number of mills in and near the
Liberty Craftworks area, showing traditional skills (printing, pottery,
weaving, etc.) on display. There is a silk mill, weaving shop, carding
mill.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's truly a wonderful place. (Some of the pictures got out of order, apologies.)</div>

Yesterday I did nothing (it was glorious); today we went to my place of work.<br />
<br />
Touring the Village again (I hadn't truly been in years) really made me appreciate working there that much more and made me realize how special of a place it really is. The history and various crafts on display are just amazing. All the things you can do and see...! It's brilliant.<br />
<br />
Here's a smattering of Greenfield Village and all it has to offer:<br />

I've been busy though, so no wonder it went so fast.<br />
<br />
I have a second job now. I'm currently training to be a horse-drawn carriage driver at <a href="http://www.thehenryford.org/village/index.aspx">Greenfield Village at The Henry Ford</a>. I'm having a blast. I was a bit apprehensive at first, I must admit; I've never worked with horses before and, though I always wanted to work at Greenfield Village, I always pictured just working at one of the homes. But I am really enjoying it. I'm learning so much. Right now I'm working a lot on three-point turns because they just haven't clicked yet; it's the backing part, backing in general is still iffy for me. I have to practice that a lot.<br />
<br />
I've still been knitting too, of course. :)<br />
<br />
I participated in a knit-a-long through <a href="http://www.celticcaston.com/">Celtic Cast-On</a> for the Business Casual Socks: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HTDNrxEN5Fk/UWDUX8OKyDI/AAAAAAAAAYY/qLdF1bpKHPQ/s1600/business+cas.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HTDNrxEN5Fk/UWDUX8OKyDI/AAAAAAAAAYY/qLdF1bpKHPQ/s320/business+cas.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also made a basic pair of socks for Josh. The pair is done, I just never took a final photo: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cX9NgkdfVdY/UWDUXkz0UWI/AAAAAAAAAYQ/2hNAUldGxpQ/s1600/josh+sock.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cX9NgkdfVdY/UWDUXkz0UWI/AAAAAAAAAYQ/2hNAUldGxpQ/s320/josh+sock.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I made a sweater for myself (the Cybelle Cardigan), but don't have any finished photos of that yet. It's completely knit, but needs to block and needs the buttons sewn on. It's really lovely though. I can't wait till it's actually wearable. ;)<br />
<br />
The other day I went to a local knitting/needlepoint shop and picked up a few skeins of yarns. I immediately cast on for these Vinnland Socks in this amazing variegated green. It's Knit One Crochet Too's Crock-O-Dye and I think it may be my new favorite yarn (lucky for me because I bought another skein of it in a green-blue-purple colorway). Anyhoo, I'm past the heel now (so tired of short rows...) on the first sock and I'm just loving them:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_FtJbUS5Alc/UWDUX2Qv1FI/AAAAAAAAAYc/kpBdvLbJ8U4/s1600/vinnland+sock.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_FtJbUS5Alc/UWDUX2Qv1FI/AAAAAAAAAYc/kpBdvLbJ8U4/s320/vinnland+sock.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I also have another pair of socks on needles that I started back in January, but I'm not really enjoying them so they've stalled. They will be finished, but... Blah. I like how they look I just don't like knitting them. <br />
<br />
So that's about it for now. Work's been keeping me busy and when I'm not at either JoAnn or The Henry Ford I'm reading or knitting and watching tv it seems. I'm not terribly exciting but I enjoy it. :)<br />

<br />
I've been in something of a rut lately. After all the holiday knitting I've stalled. I have 3/4 of a sock knit and half a head for the last elephant I'll be making for a while, but that's it. Josh's sweater is basically done, just needing the zipper sewn in (but I'm without an operable sewing machine). I have so much yarn - and got more for Christmas, along with other knitty supplies - and so many things I do want to make, I just... don't want to knit right now. I want to cross stitch, but I don't have supplies for that currently so that's not an option.<br />
<br />
I've been reading a lot lately though. I've finished three books already this year, and am nearly done with the fourth. I have a few piles just waiting to be worked through, not to mention all the others on the shelves that just want to be read. I want to read them all *right now* but obviously can't. But I'm plugging away and enjoying it again.<br />
<br />
I'm also in a rut life-wise lately, not just with hobbies. I was at the <a href="http://www.dia.org/">DIA</a> on January 2 to see a Faberge show (which was amazing - and of course I picked up a book on Faberge) and in the gift shop they had a book by someone I graduated high school with. This just depressed me. I knew she had it out there, but as long as it was just briefly mentioned on Facebook and her blog, safely at a distance through the computer screen, I could ignore it. But there it was, sitting there. One more thing looming over me, making me feel like a failure. I haven't written anything since I graduated last May, though I have ideas, and seeing her book was like a punch to the gut. I need to write again. Work on something again.<br />
<br />
Additionally, my sister is heading to California in the near future to do work at some sort of farm... I'm not exactly sure. And she's applied for a Fulbright to go to Iceland. And she just seems so much... better? than me that it stings.<br />
<br />
Josh keeps reminding me that I have things she doesn't have. And that I can write something out of some of the ideas I have, I just need to do it. He's helping me keep perspective on things a bit. Whenever I get down about what I've done or how to manage bills and necessities, he's there to keep me from going crazy with "what ifs" and worries.<br />
<br />
There's a scene in the Anne of Green Gables movie/mini from the 80s, after Anne has performed at the concert at White Sands, where she and Diana are looking out over the water at sunset.<br />
<br />

<blockquote class="tr_bq">

You know something, Diana? We are rich. We have sixteen years to our
credit, and we both have wonderful imaginations. We should be as happy
as queens.
<br />

<br />

Look at that. You couldn't enjoy its loveliness more if you had ropes of diamonds.
<br />
<b>Diana</b>:
I don't know about that.</blockquote>
I need to listen to Anne. I am rich. I have a wonderful husband and a crazy little cat. We have a home. I have a job, which in this economy is something to be grateful for. I have time and means for my hobbies and passions. I could drive myself crazy thinking about what I could have or could be, not appreciating what I do have. I'm incredibly lucky. "We are rich." We really are.Bronwyn Mroz Bensonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514113458644464177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3152402159959301327.post-91065617408165884832012-11-27T10:28:00.002-05:002012-11-27T10:28:56.138-05:00Plugging Along<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've just cast on with this yarn for <a href="http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEss11/PATTornamental.php">Ornamental Socks</a>. I love this color (it's a bit lighter in person) and I've been wanting to do the pattern since it came out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cwPBz6JXZBE/ULTZA5p2SlI/AAAAAAAAAW8/oOFG_HVTJP8/s320/image_medium.jpg" width="240" /></div>
I made this last night from the free skein of Knit Picks Biggo I got. Just a basic seed stitch cowl (the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/luxus-cowl">Luxus Cowl</a>), it knit up really fast, though I did run out of yarn so it's a bit shorter than the pattern called for. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mGpxeMIUX4o/ULTZBqiP5MI/AAAAAAAAAXE/EBYcFkS_uFo/s1600/image_medium2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mGpxeMIUX4o/ULTZBqiP5MI/AAAAAAAAAXE/EBYcFkS_uFo/s320/image_medium2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The yarn is gorgeous and squishy and soft. I'll definitely get some again the next time I need a bulky yarn.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uS8ZVcTj_6c/ULTZCGU8lVI/AAAAAAAAAXM/SNUaLdaMutI/s1600/image_medium3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uS8ZVcTj_6c/ULTZCGU8lVI/AAAAAAAAAXM/SNUaLdaMutI/s320/image_medium3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
My mom's Christmas gift is done. :) I'm afraid they're a bit small for her, but I hope it'll be okay. Mine are a bit small length-wise and fit well, so I'm hoping that'll be the case for mom's too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm still working on my dad's hat. I just... don't care for it so it's hard to want to do. But it will get done. But no more hats... I don't really care for them. I'm still sewing in ends on Josh's sweater, and it's taking a while and is tedious... I have a lot of socks in the pipeline (I have a bit of a sock yarn problem... I need to actually make some of them!), and another cowl, so I want to finish some things up before starting more. Luckily most of the knitting's been going really fast, so I should get a few pair out before the end of the year.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm also working on a hat for my dad, but I don't have any photos of it yet. It's the same pattern as the next one, but in black and red to match a scarf I made him a few years ago. There will also be socks for my mom, but those haven't even been started yet.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My friend requested a hat. It's a bit big, but he likes it. He also is a great hat model, lol:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm also nearly done (finally!) with Josh's sweater. Since these two pictures, I've done the collar and have started sewing in all the ends. The sleeve cuffs are a bit big and might get ripped out and decreased more; Josh isn't sure yet though. I still have the zipper band and will have to sew in a zipper.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've also been making little things for a gift exchange online. I'm using these wonderful little Lion Brand Bonbons. They're really great to work with and the colors are great. They have a few other packs, but I like these colors the best:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been reading a lot lately too, which I've missed. I've been reading all year, but sometimes it's harder than others and I'm finally enjoying it again. I read three books last week alone and am blowing through the current one. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also won a giveaway on <a href="http://www.dull-roar.com/">Dull-Roar</a> for the "Ghosts" ebook and I can't wait to read it and make some things from it. :)</div>

It was a really nice day, cool but comfortable, slightly overcast with patches of sun, crisp air, wonderful colors around. It was lovely. We were able to get in free thanks to the kindness of a stranger outside the gate with extra tickets, and really only paid for food. We walked around a lot, looked in some of the shops, and caught a couple shows from <a href="http://www.flightoftheraptor.com/">Flight of the Raptor</a>.<br />

So, it's been a while. I finished working at the archives I was at, we moved out of our apartment, we were kinda homeless and so were living with Josh's parents for a few weeks, and moved into a house we're renting in the Detroit area. We've been moved in for a month now, and so far so good. Josh has started school again and that's going well. I'm looking for work and have had a few interviews, but nothing's panned out yet. It's getting very frustrating so I've been reading, watching tv, and knitting a lot to relax.</div>

This one I actually made back in June, for my boss at the archives. I didn't know when I'd be leaving (if I'd found a job we would have moved sooner than we did), so I wanted to give her a little something when I could. She does circus research so I thought the elephant was appropriate. :)</div>

<br />
These next ones are three baby gifts I made. I made one for my friend's new baby, and two for my mom's co-workers (both have had their babies now; a boy and a girl). <br />

<br />
I've been working pretty well on Josh's sweater and am more than halfway done with the first sleeve, but it got too hot to continue. I also wanted some quick projects that I've been wanting to do so I've made some socks (I started these last Tuesday, the 4th). Monkey:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Kalajoki (the right sock; the left isn't done yet, but I'm halfway through with the foot): <br />

<br />
I will probably keep up with the socks for awhile. I love making socks and I love quick projects and I need to feel productive right now. I think next will be Riff, but I also have Sinusoida, Paraphernalia, Harold and Maude, Maeva, and a couple others wanting to be made. I also have a couple hat prototypes in progress that are just okay, and I told my friend I'd make him a beanie for winter, so those will probably get done soon too. I just love socks. :)<br />

So, without further ado here is the pattern: <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/rs9af53qjf4n076/Anne%20Girl%20Socks%20Complete.pdf">Anne-Girl Socks!</a><br />

The gauge is 21 stitches and 30 rows over 2 inches in stockinette. I'm now done with my MA (graduation's tomorrow, now to find a job...), I've finished another baby set for another of Josh's cousins, and (!) I finished my Anne socks! :) I'm currently editing the pattern (written while knitting the first, edited while knitting the second, though once it's done I hope people will let me know if there are issues - things I might assume, since I know how it goes, I might not explain properly, etc.) and hope to have it up on ravelry soon. :)<br />
<br />
So, without further ado:<br />

Well, I think I don't read much, but as evidenced by all those "the average person only reads 4 books a year" things that seem to creep up every so often, I actually read a lot. Since being back in school I haven't read as much for pleasure as I'd like to. I'm on break right now and while I should be reading for a class, I'm taking advantage and reading for pleasure (as well as working on finishing those socks and watching too much Netflix).<br />
<br />
Unfortunately since I don't read for pleasure much lately, I've been too picky about what I'll read. When it's not for school I want it to be fun and easy and not necessarily light, but not heavy either. Don't get me wrong, I like a good heavy book and non-fiction, but right now I don't want to be reading Dickens or anything like that. So what have I just read?<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10800179-betsy-tacy-treasury">The Betsy-Tacy Treasury</a> by Maud Hart Lovelace. What a wonderful collection! It's the first four Betsy-Tacy books (there are ten total) and I can't believe I've only just read these! (Though I guess most of them have been out of print for awhile.) They are gorgeous little stories and just perfect. Very like Anne of Green Gables in a lot of ways. Just beautiful and that perfect old-timeyness I love without being dull. If I ever have a daughter I can't wait to share this with her.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12926432-lady-almina-and-the-real-downton-abbey">Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey</a> by The Countess of Carnarvon. Like pretty much everyone else in the country I love Downton Abbey. Really anything PBS and/or British and/or period pieces. Anyhow, I love Downton Abbey, so when I saw the book I had to read it. Well, it wasn't everything I hoped, but interesting enough. There wasn't enough about the house and the staff and the things about Downton and Upstairs Downstairs that are so good, and too much about the nursing and Egypt and not about the house. It was still interesting, but not what I wanted.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2702244-every-eye">Every Eye</a> by Isobel English. I think I've mentioned them before, but if not: I love <a href="http://www.persephonebooks.co.uk/">Persephone Books</a>. Like, maybe a little too much? I don't know. Persephone Books publishes out of print books by mainly women authors and they're just fabulous. I found two at Barnes and Noble once, but the rest I bought through the website (I have ten). The B&N ones have painted covers in color, but still echo the style of the others. The ones through the website have gorgeous dove grey, soft feeling, <i>book-jacketed</i> paperback covers. They have gorgeous colored endpapers and come with a bookmark for the book printed with a quote from the book on one side and the endpaper on the other side. The B&N ones have grey toned endpapers and no bookmarks, but have a folded cover so they still feel like they're book-jacketed. They're also that wonderful soft feeling cover. Anyway, I love Persephone books. I've read five of the ten books I have so far. I'll probably move on to another one next. But back to what I read. I read <u>Every Eye</u>, which wasn't my favorite. Of the five I've read, three I love and two I just like okay. This was one of the two. It was short, which was its appeal at this moment, and the website described it wonderfully (or I wouldn't've bought it in the first place), but it just didn't deliver. I couldn't really connect to the characters at all and the ending was over-hyped. There were also sentences scattered throughout in French, much like the Poirot books, and much like Poirot, I just skipped them because I don't know French. Maybe those few extra sentences would have added something? I don't know. It was written beautifully, don't get me wrong. I wish I could write like this, but it didn't deliver. It just wasn't what I wanted. I will probably read another Persephone book next (though I have a few others staring at me...), hopefully with better results than this one. :/<br />
<br />
I have another book I read recently but it needs it's own post with pictures. For some reason I can't upload pictures right now or I would've done it already. Additionally, I was going to share photos of my Persephone's because I can't describe them well enough, but again, pictures won't upload right now. :(Bronwyn Mroz Bensonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514113458644464177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3152402159959301327.post-78836777727825534812012-03-05T18:54:00.000-05:002012-03-05T18:54:08.657-05:00One down, one to goI finished my sock! To think I had been so worried about the heel, and that was the least of the issues. I should've been worrying about the toe, lol. I think I tried the toe four times before I got it to work right! Stupid toes... So, the first sock is done. Now to type out the pattern from my notes and try it on the second sock and hope all of my notes are correct. :) So, here it is:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vFSabaaH5gc/T1VRpHR13LI/AAAAAAAAAOc/rOwWYj8G6vM/s1600/anne+socks+012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vFSabaaH5gc/T1VRpHR13LI/AAAAAAAAAOc/rOwWYj8G6vM/s320/anne+socks+012.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a_m2zqPJW8c/T1VRr9bfqGI/AAAAAAAAAOk/Q4zd3mEumWY/s1600/anne+socks+013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a_m2zqPJW8c/T1VRr9bfqGI/AAAAAAAAAOk/Q4zd3mEumWY/s320/anne+socks+013.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>I went outside to take these (natural light and all that), not even thinking about that it was quarter to six in the evening... Additionally, I locked myself out of our apartment. :( I'm still cold... Lesson learned on a few counts... :-/ But the sock is done and I'm happy about that. :)Bronwyn Mroz Bensonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514113458644464177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3152402159959301327.post-45042549894695915912012-03-04T17:00:00.000-05:002012-03-04T17:00:42.769-05:00Anne-girl part 2Last May I started my <a href="http://nzfriend.blogspot.com/2011/05/my-new-socks.html">Anne of Green Gables inspired socks</a>. I had gotten to where I wanted the heel and stalled. I didn't want to mess up the heel especially with such wonderful yarn. After I finished the baby stuff last week I picked them back up and just steamed ahead, frogging be damned. Luckily I didn't really have to frog anything! I did rip a bit out just because I didn't like the sl1, k1 heel pattern so much and just went to a regular knit heel. Anyway, after a bit of math, I turned the heel and did the gusset and now I'm more than halfway through the foot! :) I'm on spring break now and so hope to have sock one done this week. Anyhoo, pictures to share:<br />

I finished the third thing I was making today. I didn't think I'd get two things finished, let alone three! I was busy all weekend and my hands hurt a bit now, but that just means I'm doing it right. ;) So here are the gifts: </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-peupsOlOoNA/T0vugvkSCqI/AAAAAAAAANM/DrKSSA43vNM/s1600/cat+and+baby+042.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-peupsOlOoNA/T0vugvkSCqI/AAAAAAAAANM/DrKSSA43vNM/s320/cat+and+baby+042.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">From the top, the Garter-Stitch Baby Kimono, the inside to show how it ties, a close up of the buttons, the Twinkle Twinkle Bonnet, a close up of the smocking, and Saartjes Booties. I really like how the set turned out. They're girly but not super girly and the blue buttons really add something I think. :) I hope the mom-to-be likes them. :)</div>Bronwyn Mroz Bensonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514113458644464177noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3152402159959301327.post-72193529483199925952012-02-23T16:53:00.000-05:002012-02-23T16:53:13.743-05:00Seen at work<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I work at our school's archives and we come across some interesting items as we're processing the collections.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1ubgaT1ArBk/T0a0YOKgDsI/AAAAAAAAALk/zXN3lko15ZU/s320/feb+015.JPG" width="240" /></div><br />

Josh and I made a very quick trip to Buffalo to be there. They didn't know what they were having so it was a surprise, hence the fairly neutral gift I made. They had a girl and named her Charlotte Marie. She's adorable of course. :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I've started the gift for the baby shower March 3rd. I'm making the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/garter-stitch-baby-kimono">Garter Stitch Baby Kimono</a> right now. I'm planning on making some booties too and maybe a hat, but I'm not super speedy, so we'll see... Here's the progress so far:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-51O1WJ1gxkY/Tz2fa8Mrc_I/AAAAAAAAALU/b646MayScwg/s320/Feb+16+030.JPG" width="320" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XMbApt23lw4/Tz2fdkeeZMI/AAAAAAAAALc/UcbpJ7P0-WA/s1600/Feb+16+041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XMbApt23lw4/Tz2fdkeeZMI/AAAAAAAAALc/UcbpJ7P0-WA/s320/Feb+16+041.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>I'm onto the sleeves now (as you can see) and am having serious ladder issues. More than I've had with dpns in a long time. I'm hoping they'll resolve once I can work with them a bit. Anyhow, I love how it's turning out so far. I bought some really pretty light denim blue buttons to pull out the blue in the yarn, and got the same buttons in the smaller size for the booties. I really like this sweater and the yarn is gorgeous.Bronwyn Mroz Bensonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514113458644464177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3152402159959301327.post-75062952484164222612012-01-30T16:42:00.000-05:002012-01-30T16:42:35.206-05:00Baby stuff<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My brother- and sister-in-law are having their third child in two weeks. Josh's cousin is pregnant and the shower's at the beginning of May. So far these are what I have: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gyTjCmNzdzc/TycOARHUtLI/AAAAAAAAALE/-mQvJYf3vpA/s320/january+27+018.JPG" width="320" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9iZ6MjV9U5Y/TycOGNLac3I/AAAAAAAAALM/hib43cS1-PY/s1600/hat+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9iZ6MjV9U5Y/TycOGNLac3I/AAAAAAAAALM/hib43cS1-PY/s320/hat+002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Those are actually the same color, one just has the flash on and the other doesn't. I don't know yet what else I'm making, but I have a few ideas. They will come once they're done. :)Bronwyn Mroz Bensonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514113458644464177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3152402159959301327.post-48130850361794016922012-01-20T19:32:00.000-05:002012-01-20T19:32:04.567-05:00MotivationSo for our wedding gifts to each other Josh and I each bought ourselves something we'd been wanting. I knew I wanted some nicer yarn than most of what I use (whatever JoAnn's sells...) but wanted a decent amount so nothing too expensive. I got this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--8sx-VoEfG4/TxoFL9lqN6I/AAAAAAAAAK0/IBAC6gaY5lk/s1600/motivation+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--8sx-VoEfG4/TxoFL9lqN6I/AAAAAAAAAK0/IBAC6gaY5lk/s320/motivation+002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>29 skeins of KnitPicks yarns. :) Bulky all the way down to fingering. I have things planned for 3-4 of the colors already and bought them with their projects in mind. The bulky on the left will be the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/twenty-ten-cardigan">Twenty-Ten Cardigan</a>. The green and/or brown in the middle will be the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/folded">Folded </a>pullover. And the light blue barely visible in the middle will be <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/kalajoki">Kalajoki </a>socks. I'm not sure about the rest, but the colors were too much to resist. And one of the colorways was on sale because it was being discontinued, so how could I resist? ;)<br />
<br />
I got this for Christmas from my aunt:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HKOBZWfhaSU/TxoFNtVyz5I/AAAAAAAAAK8/Ekho5R2RH8E/s1600/motivation+025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HKOBZWfhaSU/TxoFNtVyz5I/AAAAAAAAAK8/Ekho5R2RH8E/s320/motivation+025.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>It's actually a bit darker than the photo shows. I think it's going to be the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tamarind-cowl">Tamarind Cowl</a>.<br />
<br />
Anyhow, all of this is to say that I'm extremely motivated to finish things I have started already because I don't want to start more new things! I did make a little bag out of some leftover sock yarn (and still didn't finish it, which was the goal)... But otherwise, nothing new. So I'm working again on my crocheted blanket I started ages ago, I'm working again on the sweater for Josh that I started at least a year ago, and I have a Christmas present to finish for my in-laws (need to get more embroidery thread before I can finish though) and a birthday present for my grandmother. I also have a baby sweater that I started for a friend but will finish for my new little niece or nephew next month. I'm feeling so productive right now! Granted, it should be school-productive, not crafty-productive, but what can you do? ;) :)Bronwyn Mroz Bensonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514113458644464177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3152402159959301327.post-48358003597241987772012-01-11T21:21:00.000-05:002012-01-11T21:21:00.828-05:00Day trip<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We took a little day trip up north today. Josh was a good sport and humored me by getting out of the car for pictures:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WJv8IZWHqNI/Tw5CKE9KTiI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/9tfriphHreI/s1600/st+ignace+009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WJv8IZWHqNI/Tw5CKE9KTiI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/9tfriphHreI/s320/st+ignace+009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

I've never driven the Mackinac Bridge before (I've always just been a passenger). It's a little nerve-wracking, but I made it. The clouds over the bridge were amazing so I had Josh take pictures. He had a lot of fun with them: <br />

It ended Monday, I finished this late Sunday. You didn't think I'd do a book cover contest and not do an Anne cover, did you? :) Green Gables and Anne are both on white linen. Green Gables I stitched through both the white and blue and you can see a bit of the white around the edges. Anne I appiqued on in entirely; a tiresome process, but sooo worth it in the end. I think she looks pretty fabulous. I used the text from the movie and just back-stitched it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2y1rHwdbNgg/Tr2akocqdZI/AAAAAAAAAIc/n_AfaWZ2yhw/s1600/anne+015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2y1rHwdbNgg/Tr2akocqdZI/AAAAAAAAAIc/n_AfaWZ2yhw/s320/anne+015.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> The illustration from the Anne of Green Gables Treasury alongside my piece. :)<br />

You can see the white around the edges. Ignore the blue, I took the photos before I cleaned it. The trees and bushes are felt with french knot flowers. The tree trunks are just sort of satin stitched, but not in a smooth way so that they'd look more tree like. The roof threads are woven through each other. The grass by the house is the raw edge of the green fabric. :)<br />

They're the ones that re-published <u>Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day</u>, the basis for the movie with Amy Adams and Frances McDormand (which I loved, book and movie). They publish out of print books by mainly female writers; they're nearly all published with just a plain dove grey cover (their Persephone Classics get an artsy cover). Everything I've read through them I've loved in one way or another. <u>Miss Pettigrew</u> was wonderful and light and fun, <u>Cheerful Weather for the Wedding</u> by Julia Stratchey was wonderful but a bit heart-breaking, and so on. The one that's stuck with me the most was <u>Manja</u> by Anna Gmeyner, book no. 39.<br />
<br />
From their website, "Written in London by a young Austrian playwright in exile, <i><b>Manja</b></i> opens, radically, with five conception scenes one night in 1920. Set in the turbulent Germany of the Weimar Republic, it goes on, equally dramatically, to describe the lives of the children and their families until 1933 when the Nazis came to power. 'What is so unusual,' wrote the playwright Berthold Viertel in 1938, 'is the way the novel contrasts the children's community - in all its idealism, romanticism, decency and enchantment - with the madhouse community of the adults.'" This book is quite long - over 500 pages - but reads so well. You go between all the children at various points and see how their lives all connect and intersect and how they're all tied together. It's also amazing in that it was written before World War II started, yet shows the horror of the Nazis already. It's a beautiful book, but terribly sad too. I read it in 2010 and still think about it. I really highly recommend it.<br />
<br />
Because of all of this, <u>Manja</u> was the next book I made a cover for for the contest mentioned previously. I loved doing the cover and since the book has the dove grey cover it left it completely up to me. This is what I came up with: <br />
<br />

She couldn't find anything suitable. In the end she took out her scarf and tied it round the birch tree. It looked sad and stupid. But she left it." -p. 520<br />
<br />
While it's not a birch tree, I love this tree and loved layering each branch over others. It was challenging but rewarding. I love this. We got her exactly one month ago today, and she was about 6 weeks old when we got her. Her name's Curious George Eliot and she's absolutely wonderful and crazy and a pain in the butt. I adore her. This was her on day one:<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C-7tn8-n9Os/ToUSRXEKVJI/AAAAAAAAAHI/LZ5Pfcg3e9U/s1600/george+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" kca="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C-7tn8-n9Os/ToUSRXEKVJI/AAAAAAAAAHI/LZ5Pfcg3e9U/s320/george+001.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div> And these are her yesterday:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qmCN7nza3DM/ToUTEGC9UCI/AAAAAAAAAHM/qHR80IVjklA/s1600/phone+007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320px" kca="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qmCN7nza3DM/ToUTEGC9UCI/AAAAAAAAAHM/qHR80IVjklA/s320/phone+007.JPG" width="240px" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KG7c7Zd86kQ/ToUZlT35vEI/AAAAAAAAAHU/paVa5TojBXw/s1600/wheatland+plus+238.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" kca="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KG7c7Zd86kQ/ToUZlT35vEI/AAAAAAAAAHU/paVa5TojBXw/s320/wheatland+plus+238.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div> She's grown so much. She's not that little fluff ball we adopted anymore. She's getting all sleek and shiny and already seems so big. She's such a crazy little thing too though. She bounces off every surface and attacks the carpet or a bit of fuzz. She chases her tail and jumps and flips. When she's been in her cage for the night or when we're not home and she's let out again, she'll follow you everywhere. Sometimes I think she's afraid of her own shadow. She's wonderful. Oh George. :)<br />
<br />
I'm participating in <a href="http://www.feelingstitchy.com/2011/09/covered-in-stitches-feeling-stitchy.html">Feeling Stitchy's contest</a> for embroidered book covers. It's inspired by Penguin's new book covers for <u>Emma</u>, <u>The Secret Garden</u>, and <u>Black Beauty</u>. So far I've done this one from Evelyn Waugh's <u>Vile Bodies</u>:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SrBIDL2X7PM/ToUZrhawMsI/AAAAAAAAAHY/Hf2ZyeqQsEk/s1600/stitching+012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" kca="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SrBIDL2X7PM/ToUZrhawMsI/AAAAAAAAAHY/Hf2ZyeqQsEk/s320/stitching+012.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ft6hoGu5VZk/ToUZ4KEKeiI/AAAAAAAAAHg/ecwwt_zHYig/s1600/stitching+035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" kca="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ft6hoGu5VZk/ToUZ4KEKeiI/AAAAAAAAAHg/ecwwt_zHYig/s320/stitching+035.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>I'm really proud of this. I actually had traced this cover weeks ago because I think it's just an awesome cover, and then there's this contest that ties in perfectly. I'm definitely a book person though, so it's not such a stretch for me. :) I tried to use a bunch of different stitches, and it's *all* stitched. The hair is raised stem stitch, the jewellery and top of the dress is satin stitch, the skin and bottom of the skirt are chain stitch. The black around the jewellery and in the picture is all back stitch and the whole thing is outlined in stem stitch. I'm really happy with how it turned out. It's really cool. :) I have a few more ideas ready to go that will have bits of applique and stitching combined. Hopefully they'll turn out as well as this one.Bronwyn Mroz Bensonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15514113458644464177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3152402159959301327.post-33033486187984720892011-08-23T22:27:00.000-04:002011-08-23T22:27:09.007-04:00Long time no seeSo it's been a while. It hasn't been terribly exciting here lately overall. Though, my awful roommate moved out and my fiance moved in. :) The apartment's definitely more cozy when you don't have to worry about running into the other person, and there's more stuff and it's just friendlier feeling in general. It's awesome. :) Though, we've been wedding planning, going back and forth between a fairly big, regular wedding and basically just eloping. We're going to have the regular, nice wedding and hope that being near Christmas not so many people will come (my issue with the regular wedding is how big it was getting). We've got the church and photographer and are about to send out save the dates (which I know are, like, months late...), and I have my dress. That's it. This is way more complicated and stressful than I wanted. I just want to marry him, I don't want all this fuss, lol!<br />
<br />
I haven't been terribly productive lately. I haven't knit really at all lately. I've been cross stitching again lately, and embroidering - which I love because I can whip things out in a day or so depending on size. One of the embroideries was a gift that was just given so I couldn't share until now. :)<br />
<br />
The gift for my wonderful friend, Mandy, and her new husband, Steve: <br />
